The Art of Meditation by Daniel Goleman

The Art of Meditation by Daniel Goleman

The most prominent positive psychologists: Sonja Lyubomirsky, Tal Ben-Shahar, Martin Seligman, Daniel Goleman and others recommend Meditation as a way to improve your well being.

From the book The Art of Meditation by Daniel Goleman, who has collaborated on various psychology projects with the leaders of the Buddhist religion, and the Dalai Lama himself

*      The Art of Meditation is one of the most ancient methods for

*      Quieting the mind and calming the body

*      Meditation is in essence the systematic retraining of attention

*      It cultivates a sharpened focus and enriches your perception

*      The uses and benefits of meditation are varied:

o   It gives your body a deep rest while keeping your mind alert

o   This lowers your blood pressure and slows your heart rate

o   Giving your body a chance to recuperate from stress

*      Medicall,y meditation is used  for a part of treatment for various conditions:

*      Hypertension, headaches and backaches, anxiety and to control or reduce chronic pain

*      The deep rest of meditation offers another benefit :

*      It strengthens the immune system – the line of defense against bacteria, virus and cancer

*      Meditation allows you to find an Inner Serenity

*      A haven where you can escape the hectic doings of the day

*      The daily habit of meditation will help you unwind from the day’s stresses and

*      Calm and energize you for the future challenges

*      There are different kinds of meditation, but four will be explained…

*      You can experiment for a few weeks and then choose one or a combination

*      Try to practice daily for at least 15 minutes to obtain the most benefit

*      Doing it once in a while is better than none at all

*      You can use background music to help you relax

The First meditation – Breath Meditation

*      Breath Meditation is a basic training that strengthens your concentration

*      As you practice it you will notice that your mind wonders to other thoughts

*      It is natural, it happens to everyone

*      The first goal of meditation is to strengthen what we may call “the muscle of attention”

*      Each time your mind wonders from your breath you bring it back, like a basic

*      Repetition in building that muscle- the more you do it, the stronger the muscle gets

*      The Breath Meditation is one of the simplest and most widespread methods

*      Found in almost every ancient spiritual tradition, in one form or another

*      The Buddha used it when he was Enlighted, sitting under the bodhi tree

*      Zen and other meditators use it today

“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”

Meaning, Pleasure and Strengths- MPS

·         Finding the right job- with three questions: MPS:

·         What gives me meaning? What gives me pleasure? What are my strengths

·         Looking at the areas of overlap helps find the work that makes us happiest

·         Managers can hire the best people using MPS

·         We may need to think of the moments when we felt true purpose

·         Studies have been made on hospital cleaners:

·         One group saw their job as just a job

·         Another group perceived it as meaningful- they engaged in interactions with patients

·         How we perceive the work can be more important than the work itself

·         Those who perceive their work as meaningful are happier than those who don’t

·         These findings have been tested among hairdressers, technicians and other fields

·         We need to realize that the possibility exists- happiness is not contingent only on

·         Where we are, what we do-but on how we choose to perceive it

Ralph Emerson:

·         “To different minds, the same world is heaven or hell”

·         What we choose to focus on, determines if we enjoy what we do

·         A change in perception can make a tremendous difference

·         We can find pleasure by focusing on it

Hamlet:

·         “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”

·         Instead of focusing on what we can live with, we should focus on what we can’t live without

Exercises – The Three Questions Process

1.       What gives me meaning? What provides me with a sense of purpose?

2.       What gives me pleasure? What do I enjoy doing?

3.       What are my strengths? What am I good at?

·         Identify what you want your life to look like

·         Describe what you do and ask:

o   Can you change your routine; incorporate more of what is meaningful?

o   Ask what potential meaning there is in what you already do

Happiness at work - what studies show

Happiness at work

“Taste the Joy that comes from Labor” - Longfellow

·         Am I happy at work?

·         Certain conditions can lead an employee to experience more meaning in their work

1.       The work should draw out the variety of talents and skills

2.       The employee should complete the whole task from beginning to end, rather than play a minor role in the big picture

3.       The employee should feel that her work has a significant impact on others

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi –

·         Showed that work that is neither too difficult nor too easy leads to higher levels of

·         Engagement- We have to create meaning and pleasure at work

·         The ultimate responsibility to find the proper job lies with us

·         We can increase FLOW by setting clear Goals, even when the job does not require it

·         Taking Initiative can help, but sometimes we need to look for another job

·         We need courage, having fear and going ahead anyway-

Finding our Calling

Abraham Maslow – “The most beautiful fate, the most wonderful good fortune that could happen to any human being is to be paid for doing that which he passionately loves to do”

·         It is not always easy to discover what sort of work would lead to this fortune

·         Research shows that people experience their work in 3 ways, as a:

1.       job

2.       career

3.       calling

·         The job is perceived as obligation, with focus on pay, not personal fulfillment

·         For a career, the motivation is extrinsic- advancement, power, prestige

·         For “The calling”- the job is an End in itself-he works because he wants to,

·         He is passionate about what he does, he perceives it as privilege rather than duty

·         The way we see work –job, career or calling- affects our happiness

·         Satisfaction with life and work is more dependent on how the employee sees her work

·         Than on income or occupational prestige

·         It takes effort to find our calling

·         Most job tests focus on our strengths rather than our Passions

·         Questions like “what am I good at?”must be asked after

·         We have identified what gives us Meaning- What do I Want to Do?
