Happiness Principles

Happiness Principles

Flow...from The How of Happiness by Sonja Lyubomirsky

Living in
the Present
There was a
cartoon in The New Yorker:
1. first a man is sitting at his desk
daydreaming about playing golf
2. the same man is then playing golf,
while fantasizing about sex
3. in the third he is in bed with a
woman, thinking about work
4. we do not live in the present
5. but there is only one moment
guaranteed: the present
there are
two activities to make us live in the present: Flow and Savouring
·
both
are states of mind associated with positive emotions and well being

Happiness Activity Number 8 – Increasing Flow Experiences
Have been
absorbed, losing track of time, absorbed and forgetting about hunger…Flow was
discovered by Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi in the 60s. He studied painters:
·
he
was struck by how often they ignored hunger, discomfort and fatigue
·
while
working on paintings
·
the
artists found painting rewarding and described their experience using the
metaphor of
·
a
current carrying them along
·
this
is FLOW
Csikszentmihalyi argues that
·
a good, happy life is
characterized by Flow, complete absorption by what one does
·
the key to creating Flow is to
establish a balance between skills and
challenges
·
whether you are rock climbing,
performing surgery, driving if the challenges are bigger
·
you will feel anxious, frustrated-or
bored if the activity is not challenging enough
·
Flow is an activity that falls
just in the right space between boredom and
anxiety
·
Flow is good for you because
it is pleasurable and fulfilling
·
The enjoyment is lasting and reinforcing, with a
natural high that is positive and productive
·
An experience that does not
cause guilt or shame
·
Flow states are intrinsically rewarding, we naturally want to repeat them
·
As we master new skills our pleasure
diminishes, because the task is no longer demanding
·
To experience Flow we have to continue to test ourselves in more challenging activities
·
We have to apply focused mental discipline, to stretch
ourselves to find new opportunities
·
It means that we are constantly growing, becoming more competent and complex

We cannot allow our happiness
to depend on external conditions
Every positive event is
accompanied by adaptation
Csikszentmihalyi has a solution:
·
We can escalate our
expectations
·
As
long as we enjoy the struggle along the
way
·
Flow
leads us to be involved in life, to
enjoy activities and have a sense of control
·
Feel
a strong sense of self
·
This
imbues life with meaning, intensity and
happiness

Finding Flow implies the ability to
·
expand your mind and body to their
limits
·
strive to accomplish something
difficult and worthwhile
·
discover rewards in each moment,
life itself
Recommendations
for Flow:
1. Control Attention – to increase the frequency and
length of Flow experiences

·
You
need to become fully engaged and
involved- the secret is Attention.
·
William
James, the father of Psychology wrote: “my
experience is what I agree to attend to”
·
What you notice and pay attention to
is your experience, your life.
·
Where
you direct your attention is critical.
·
To
enter a state of Flow Attention needs to
be directed fully to the task at hand…
·
if
the challenge is too low and you become
bored your attention drifts elsewhere,
·
If the challenge is too much, you become
stressed and attention turns to your
limitations…
·
your
aim is to gain control over what you pay
attention to
·
you
need to gain control over your
conscience moment by moment
·
this
can provide a sense of mastery and
control in life

2.
Adopt New Values

·
Happy people have the capacity to
enjoy their life even when material conditions are lacking and even when goals
have not been reached
·
How?
By using these values
1.
Be open to new and different
experiences
2. Learn until the day you die- Spanish, history…
·
Try
to imitate the concentration on the face of a child
·
Learning new things every day
In one study,
workers have been given pagers that beep them
·
Signals
indicated that they needed to complete several items:
·
How
much they were concentrated
·
Do
they want to continue what they were doing
·
How
happy, strong and committed they were feeling
·
at
work they spent more time in high skill
situations that produced flow, than in low skill situations
·
they
were inclined to feel apathy at home

3.
Transform Routine Tasks

·
Even
boring activities can be transformed into
something more meaningful
·
Create
micro-Flow activities with specific goals and rules
·
You
can solve puzzles in your head tap melodies…
·
If
it is challenging and interesting it is all right

4.
Flow in Conversation

·
An
important part of your day may be spent in conversation
·
Do
you experience flow?
·
Focus your attention on what the
other person is saying and your reactions
·
Don’t
be too quick to respond, give the space to expand thoughts
·
Give
yourself the goal to learn more about the person: what is on her mind
·
Have
you learned something new?
·
This
will make you more self-conscious

5.
Smart Leisure

·
Do
you watch TV? In what percentage of free time do you exercise your mind?
·
If
it is low, it means you are unlikely to
be in flow during the leisure time

6.
Smart Work

·
Work
can be rewarding if you are lucky and you make it be
·
One
study of workers found that people tend to see their work in three ways:
·
1.
As a job
·
2.
As a career
·
3.
As a calling
·
Those
who see it as a job, do not see work as rewarding
·
For
the career man, job is advancement wait for reward
·
A Calling- they enjoy work, find it fulfilling, they work
because they want to
·
Artists,
teachers, scientists and neurosurgeons
are more likely to enjoy their jobs
·
People
can find meaning in their jobs
·
Interviews
with cleaning crew revealed that:
·
Some
disliked it, did the minimum required
·
Others
saw it as something grander, more significant
·
Liked
cleaning – found flow in their jobs, improved lives of others
·
From
hairdressers to engineers could find Flow in their jobs
·
Your
own job can benefit from a new perspective

7.
Strive for Super Flow

·
You
can immerse in music
·
Become
one with nature
·
Lose track of time during a phone call
·
Or
something more magnificent – Super Flow
a. Not only absorbed but
b. Transcendent –when
the child resolves some new math difficult problem, for instance
c. Chat with someone, for example
d.
It bolsters confidence, happiness
Playing video
games can be addictive even if similar to Flow

From The How of Happiness by Sonja Lyubomirsky

Happiness Activity Number 7- Learning to Forgive
·
Research
show plenty of reasons why we should give
·
You
do it for yourself and not the other
person
·
Forgiving
doesn’t mean restoring the relationship
·
Clinging to anger is harming you
·
Buddha
said: “clinging to anger is like keeping
a hot coal to throw it at someone- it will burn you”
·
Research
shows that forgiving people are less
hateful, depressed, anxious, neurotic
·
Forgiving people are happier,
healthier, more agreeable and serene, they empathize
·
Inability
to forgive means that individuals dwell on revenge
Studies
show that training in forgiveness brings improvement in well-being and mental health:
·
Women
over 65, hurt by an experience were assigned to a forgiveness or discussion
group
·
They
met for 6 weeks and those in the
·
forgiveness group had lower
anxiety and higher self-esteem
Studies
were made with other people who felt hurt or neglected and
·
those
in the forgiveness condition showed
·
diminished negative emotions and
·
higher self-esteem after the studies
·
even
months later
Forgiveness
is one of the most challenging activities
and you can use one of these activities, in a journal, letter, and conversation:
1. appreciate being forgiven- recall a time when you were forgiven by parents, lover… what insight
do you have, maybe you have a model write a letter in what you write what you
have done, apologize saying I am sorry
2. imagine forgiveness – role of imagination- identify a person who harmed you, empathize- see
him as a whole person- consider your thoughts, feelings- what would you feel…you
might experience a greater control, less anger, lower blood pressure, the body
experiences less stress
3. write a letter of forgiveness – let go of your anger, blame to a person that
harmed you, write how you were harmed, end with understanding: I forgive you…maybe
you do not send the letter, but let go… read about Gandhi
4. practice empathy- understanding another’s feelings and thoughts…feeling sympathy,
concern, compassion, even warmth…write a
letter that you wish to receive- what explanation you imagine…a new
perspective to forgive easier
5. ruminate less-
people who brood are less likely to forgive, going over the event…fantasizing increases
hostility, in spite of long held belief about letting off steam…use distraction,
divert attention to something else, in an engrossing activity or say STOP!! Loud
and clear
6. make contact –
sometimes it is good to send the letter…it will benefit, it may restore
relationship and bring joy…difficult but rewarding
